Betsy Harrington, BHP Billiton & David Lunn, WA Chair

240 people attended the WA Region CIPSA business breakfast held on 3 August at the Perth Hyatt Regency hotel. Attendees keenly anticipated the presentation by Ms Betsy Harrington, BHP Billiton Vice President Global Supply. “The Right Relationship” was Betsy’s topic and she suggested that this meant suppliers and buyers working together to increase value and decrease risk. Betsy outlined how these principles are enacted in BHP Billiton, including a focus on Total Cost of Ownership of supplied goods and services, not just in a financial sense but also considering wider issues such as clarity around compliance/governance obligations and ethical behaviours, as well as a clear Health, Safety and Environment commitment. Betsy concluded her presentation by reiterating her own passion for, and BHP-Billiton’s commitment to, strong talent management and development inside the Supply Group.
The CIPSA WA Regional Committee warmly thanks BHP Billiton and Betsy in particular, for her first-rate presentation and generous time commitment to CIPS Australia.

CIPS UK- Membership and Education
At the end of August, CIPS membership worldwide was around 41,000 – well ahead of the institute’s overall target of 38,800 for the financial year ending 31 October 2006. International growth has been particularly strong, and the development of the membership base in Australia and New Zealand has been a significant contributory factor.
Examination entries are breaking records year after year. The May 2006 exam series exceeded the previous series by almost 20% and we anticipate that the May and November exams will top 44,000 entries – the best ever entry level. We are currently taking registrations for the November 2006 examinations and expect another strong entry list.
