Business Breakfast - Making Purchasing Pay

The QLD Region hosted a Business Breakfast for Procurement Professional on the 1st February held at the Sofitel Brisbane. 75 Members and non-members congregated to listen to Jonathan Rollason present “Making Purchasing Pay” over a continental and very healthy breakfast. Jonathan identified effective purchasing practices within organizations for whom he has worked globally such as Nomura Bank in Japan. He is also a past president of CIPS globally. A copy of Jonathan’s presentation can be obtained through CIPSA, email info@cipsa.com.au or call 1300 765 142.

John Bateman

JohnBatemanphotoJohn is currently employed as a Lead Consultant with the Strategic Procurement Branch of Queensland’s Department of Main Roads. This is a new position for John, as he has only been with Main Roads since the beginning of February this year. Before joining Main Roads, John worked with Queensland Purchasing where the focus was on procurement issues across the whole of government. Prior to that, he was involved with strategic procurement planning and policy at the Department of Natural Resources and Mines.

Main Roads has approximately 4,000 employees and an annual spend of $1.2 billion. It looks after Queensland’s 34,000 km state-controlled road network - the highways and other main connecting roads in Queensland. This task involves planning, designing, building and maintaining the roads and associated infrastructure (such as bridges) on these roads.

The Strategic Procurement Branch is relatively new within Main Roads. Even so, the professionalism and enthusiasm within the Branch has resulted in setting up long term procurement strategies that are enhancing procurement planning, policy and system development. One of the aims is to position the Department as the ‘customer of choice’ with its suppliers.

John is a member of the Committee at the Queensland Branch of CIPSA. In that role he has been responsible for membership. Currently the membership for Queensland stands at 316 members. The Queensland Branch has hosted a couple of Members nights and breakfast meetings which has been well patronised by members. Other events for members where they can socialise, network and gain information on current issues are planned throughout the year.
